Consultation on air pumps nears end

A Government consultation on the use of air source heat pumps in the UK is due to end on Tuesday.

It was launched with the aim of deciding whether consumers ought to be allowed to install the heat pumps without planning permission.

Under current rules people cannot install the pumps without planning permission after officials deemed them unsightly and noisy. However, the consultation has asked whether microgeneration technologies should be given permitted development rights to allow people to install them without the green-light from planners.

If the change is to go ahead, the pumps will have to be fitted by an MCS approved installer.

David Cowburn, managing director of the National Association of Professional Inspectors and Testers (NAPIT) standards division, said that the group would welcome allowing registered installers to fit the pumps as it would limit the work to those with the ability to limit the risk of noise and unsightliness.

He added: "It will be useful for homeowners as they will be able to make decisions about installing microgeneration without having to worry about planning permission."
